Last week I posed this question in my NFC Division winners post. And Im not going to get super deep into it but I do want to take a look. It was largely believed, after last season, that all the Jets needed was a QB. New York traded a lot of draft capital to Green Bay in the off season to get Aaron Rodgers (that scumbag). As is tradition, when a Packers QB gets grumpy he has to go play for the Jets. The old man promptly tore his Achilles four plays into the Monday night season opener against the Bills. He is probably out for the season but who knows, the script writers might have something exciting for us by the end of the season. The Jets would somehow hold the Bills to 16 points and miraculously find a way to win in overtime.
New York would go on to lose their next three games. But, with the exception of the Cowboys game, they were within a score and the defense looked good. They were even tied with the Kansas City Swifties late in the 4th quarter when Butker kicked the game winning field goal. Plus, Zach Wilson played way better (Passer Rating: 105) than Taylors boyfriends QB (Passer Rating: 63). After a devastating loss that turned out to be a win in Week 1 and then three actual losses in a row the Jets headed out to Denver to determine who is the worst team in the AFC. I thought about building up some suspense here but its the Broncos. Theyre bad. Theyre just bad. The Broncos are THE worst in the AFC.
Finally, last week, the Eagles came to New Jersey. And this is what prompted this post. The Jets had the ball 10 times. The drives ended in one turnover on downs and one touchdown. The rest ended in kicks of some kind. Four punts and four made field goals. The Eagles also had 10 possessions. They had a turnover on downs in the final minutes of the game. They got in the end zone twice and punted twice. But heres how the Jets won; Philly had a lost fumble, a missed field goal, and THREE interceptions.
Thats what has happened so far this season. New York is 3-3 and in 3rd place in the AFC East. They have a -6 point differential, which you would expect for a team sitting at .500. The Jets defense is rated 24th over all and their offense is sitting at 30th, only ahead of the Steelers and Bengals. Our official rankings have them in the middle of the B Tier. Everything about this is completely mediocre..
I actually think theyre better than mediocre. If they can figure out a way to keep Wilson off the ground, they might even be good. Hell, Ill go as far as to say that they could end up 10-7. They have a few tough games remaining, the Bills (who the already beat) and the Dolphins twice. But their next three are all very winnable. And if they get hot, who knows, they may just sneak into the playoffs.
