I’ve loved the Scottish band, Mogwai, for quite some time. They constantly surprise with new and inventive music, while still being true to their sound.
Much of the time, it’s just instrumental epic rock music that sounds like a film score for an apocalyptic movie. In fact, they’ve done plenty of film scores, which have added to the mood of most of those films quite well.
They also manage to add vocals here and there, but it’s mainly to complement what is going on in the rest of the music. Sometimes, they like to use autotune/vocoder effects to give the voice an almost synthesized sound.
This new album, As the Love Continues, came as a bit of a welcome surprise. It starts soaring and continues the emotional ride the way I like it.
Dry Fantasy is a song that balances all the band elements well. You got spirally/atmospheric synths, a familiar bassline, and loving guitars.
I also really like the second track, Here We, Here We, Here We Go Forever, because it is a bombastic banger. The main lead guitar has a really nasally tone and I think there might be some Heil talk box effect going on as well.
If you like post rock, mostly instrumental music, Mogwai never disappoints. Put this album on and dream about a time when zombies will try to eat your face.
