I just did a review of my division winner picks throughout the season. Now its time to take a look at how my playoff picks went.
Wildcard week I successfully picked 5 of the 6 games. That said, 2 of the games were no brainers. Bucs over the Eagles and the Chiefs over the Steelers. The Bills win over the Patriots was not a total surprise much like the Rams win over the Cardinals. But, playing division rivals, especially in a do or die situation can often be a coin-toss. Then theres the 49ers victory over the Cowboys. I dont think its the biggest upset weve ever seen in a wildcard round but its up there. Again, some people will probably give this win to the refs but they are wrong. The 49ers put the Cowboys in a situation where they had to be outstanding and they just didnt have it. Then theres the one I got wrong. The Bengals eliminating the Raiders isnt a surprise. I just happened to go the wrong direction.
In the Divisional Round I went 3 of 4. Again, this is probably the most exciting weekend of football I have ever watched. I cant think of 4 games that I have enjoyed back to back more than these. Even with a spoiler from Katohater I was on the edge of my seat. So, Rams beat the Bucs. That pick was probably wishful thinking more than football logic but it was the right one. The Chiefs beat the Bills, by a coin toss. Perhaps we will see the overtime rules revised again this off season. Who knows. My upset pick was the 49ers once again and man did they deliver. With about 5 minutes left ESPN had the Packers at a 90% chance of victory. But then special teams snuck up on the Packers and a blocked punt turned into a 49ers touchdown and everything was tied. Rodgers couldnt preform and the 49ers won on a Robbie Gould field goal as the clock hit 0:00. Then theres the Bengals. This week it was a surprise that they won. Somehow, despite getting sacked 9 times, Burrows managed to lead the longshot Bengals to a win over the well rested, number one seed, Tennessee Titans. Giving me my second wrong pick of the postseason.
The Conference Championships gave us 2 more amazing games. I thought that Jimmy G and the 49ers were going to go 3-0 on the Rams this season. But, Stafford, Donald and the gang had something else in mind. Stafford kicks it into 4th quarter mode, his final form, taking the Rams down the field for a touchdown and 2 Gay field goals. Then the defense turns it up and we see some classic Jimmy G with a very unnecessary interception to end the game. So, what had me surprised this week was the Bengals, again. Their luck couldnt take them past Mahomes and Reed in the Conference Championship, right? Well, shit, it did. I have been dogging the Bengals all off season and I dont think they even hit my radar during the regular season but here they are, winning the AFC, against the AFC defending champion, in overtime, WHEN MAHOMES HAD THE BALL FIRST! What, the, heck. So the Bengals have now given me 3 of my 4 incorrect post season picks.
So I am 8 for 12 in the postseason this season and there is one game left. In a couple days Ill be putting out my picks for the Super Bowl.
