I have fond memories of this tropical drink at family holiday gatherings. I think my mom found the recipe and since she was obsessed with Hawaii at the time, it became a staple of Thanksgiving and Christmas. It was made with Ocean Spray Mauna La’i guava juice blend.
It’s a simple enough recipe. For party size, you need:
- 1 – 12 oz can frozen lemonade concentrate (pink or regular)
- 2 – 32 oz guava juice containers
- 1 – 64 oz container
- regular or diet soda pop (ginger ale or lemon lime)
Take your 64 oz container, put in one can of lemonade concentrate. Then fill the rest of the way with guava juice. Mix/stir the juices together, then freeze overnight.
When it is time to make the drinks, you take the container out of the freezer and let it start to thaw a bit (not a whole lot, but some, ahem). Then you take a big spoon and scrape some juice ice shavings and put them into a cup. Add your soda pop to get a nice slushy consistency. Delicious.
I made this recipe a few years ago for Thanksgiving and it was a lot sweeter than I remember. The juice mixture is loaded with sugar. Then if you add sugar soda pop, you get a fast track to a ‘beetus coma. So, I think next time I make it, I’m going to use lemon lime La Croix or similar to keep the sugar level down and the flavor profile the same.
Happy slushing!
