The Boogeyman (1980)

This is what you might call a Halloween (1978) ripoff movie. It starts off similarly, it has shots that mimic the stalking/watching style, and the music is very synth driven. But this isn’t a John Carpenter film, it’s Ulli Lommel and what the film lacks in just about everything, it makes up for in just about nothing.

You can tell the actors are trying hard, but a lot of the acting falls flat with bad line delivery and awkward staring. Had there been a competent editor, it might not have mattered so much, but the editor appears to have been sleeping through most of the editing sessions.

The idea of a ghost entity living in a mirror and coming out to exact revenge or something was not terrible, but it was executed terribly. There was almost no tension or suspense and the 82-minute runtime felt like an eternity. It was very clear when someone was about to be killed and not many of the kills were that bloody or interesting.

There could have been a goodish movie here, but the ham-fisted attempt at recreating a John Carpenter horror film missed the mark in many ways. I honestly went and watched They Live after this to cleanse my palate.
