The Blackening (2022)

This is more of a comedy than a horror. Or rather, it’s a satirical look at horror films from an African American point of view. It pokes fun at various tropes and stereotypes when a group of friends rent a cabin in the woods to celebrate Juneteenth.

Forced to play an oddly racist board game at first, the friends must answer questions about black history to keep one of their captured friends alive. Then as things move out of the cabin, they must evade deadly racist hicks to survive. In a twist, the real mastermind is revealed in the third act.

I was unfamiliar with the main cast of fresh-faced up-and-comers, but there weren’t any hints of amateur abilities. The comedy was very in-your-face. The horror wasn’t the main focus, and wasn’t meant to be the scary variety.

I can’t say it was an amazing horror comedy film, but it wasn’t annoying or unwatchable. It set out to entertain with some awareness of current social issues and I think it succeeded well enough.
