Halloween Kills (2021)

Michael Myers is back. Again. I’m starting to feel like this is Groundhog Day with horror movies.

This is the sequel to Halloween (2018), where Jamie Lee Curtis came back to finish off Michael once and for all. Spoiler alert: she failed.

In this movie, Michael escapes from the burning house trap and goes right back to killing everyone in sight including the beefcake firefighters there to put out the house blaze. You mean to tell me this 60+ year-old dude with a mask and probable third-degree burns is more lethal than the firefighters? But he’s EVIL and he can’t be stopped. “EVIL DIES TONIGHT! EVIL DIES TONIGHT!”

Where the previous movie was more ominous and foreboding, this one goes straight for the jugular. Curtis’ character Laurie Strode is stuck in a hospital after being stabbed in the stomach in the last movie. Luckily, the townsfolk turn into a murderous mob cult to stop Michael, but fail and end up killing an innocent guy in the process.

The movie is a jumbled mess. Yes, it has Michael Myers and yes he is the badass he’s always been, but it’s missing the subtleties of a refined horror film that was crafted to scare. It’s really just a ham-fisted slasher that doesn’t matter after it is over. Nothing has changed or resolved by the end.

I did like the little throwback to the Halloween III: Season of the Witch masks. So, there’s that.
