Hellraiser (2022)

It’s like a fine onion where you keep peeling back the layers and it gets more pungent and grotesque the deeper it goes. But it’s got actual characters and a coherent story, which is rather surprising for a late-stage Hellraiser movie.

Riley is the main character and her brother, Matt, goes missing after getting cut by the puzzle box thingy. How deep into hell must she go for her brother? Or a better question would be: does she really want to make a deal with the devil to get Matt back?

There is a certain elegance in the visual style, where it is clear that care was taken to do the Clive Barker Hellraiser legacy justice. This isn’t some dogshit direct-to-video sequel.

On top of new Pinhead, there are also new Cenobite hell minions. But where’s my Butterball? He must be on vacation with those fancy sunglasses.

If you like Hellraiser and you want something more modern than the first 1-4 movies, this is a worthy new installment.
