Possession (1981)

I heard lots of good things about this movie, but I think they were all lies. Not really. There is some fun to be had, but it’s not exactly the most coherent story.

The two main characters are a husband and wife having marital issues due to growing apart and infidelity. They both descend into their own type of madness with horrific results including murder and grotesque creatures.

The Polish writer/director Andrzej Żuławski definitely knows what he is doing when it comes to crafting an artistic motion picture with a dreamlike quality. While everything that happens seems very deliberate, I felt like I couldn’t quite connect all the dots. But maybe it’s one of those movies that requires multiple viewings.

What really stood out was the performances of both leads, Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill. Isabelle was all over the place with mania and crazy eyes. Sam displayed incredible range that kept me hooked when the plot started to drag. It’s honestly worth watching for his performance alone.
