Will someone please tell these people to stop going down dark passageways without proper lighting and backup? This is America and you should be packing heat when you go into the basement.

I’m not going to go into details here, because the movie is best observed through an unspoiled lens. I will say that this is a masterfully crafted horror film with the perfect amounts of tension/release, subtle social commentary, bloody stuff, WTF moments, callbacks, and surprising plot shifts.

The beginning chunk is a bit slow, but in a good way. The middle chunk delightfully builds on the first chunk. The final bit is the weakest of all, but still not bad in the context of the whole movie.

What really works great is how the story is told through visual inference rather than direct exposition. Instead of talking about what is going on, you are shown and then you piece together what it means. This works really well when there are abrupt plot shifts that jump to a completely different area and characters, but you slowly start to realize how it fits with the other bits.
