The Slayer (1982)

An artist, Kay, travels to a very secluded island with her husband, brother, and brother’s wife. As a hurricane hits, they cannot leave the island and bad things start happening. Due to Kay’s vivid nightmares, she’s not sure what is real and dangerous vs. what is part of her imagination.

The movie was very close to being something worthy of your time, but failed in several areas. The pacing was the most noticeable problem where there was this awkward stutter between scenes that should be scary and scenes where nothing was going on. There was no real tension until about the third act when everything got going, but by then it was a bit too late. The acting is also sub par with most of the cast putting forth their lowest effort.

I did like the isolated setting coupled with the limited cast of four characters. This created the constant question of who/what was attacking them, because the menace was kept hidden. At times, I thought it could very well be the Kay character and her nightmares were her subconscious dealing with what she’d done. Luckily, it was not that and the ending was rather unexpected in a somewhat interesting way. Still, what led up to it needed to be a whole lot better for the pay off to be meaningful.
