In this Conjuring spinoff, a demon is haunting a 1950s Romanian monastery in the form of a dead nun. Father Burke (Demián Bichir) and Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) are tasked by The Vatican to investigate the death by hanging of a nun at the monastery due to its demonic nature. Will they survive the yellow eyes and sharp teeth of the freaky Nun?
Compared to the Conjuring and Annabelle movies, this was rather difficult to get through. The 96-minute run time felt too long. The formulaic story pulled me out of the experience. The actors were fine, but the characters just didn’t grab me in any measurable way. Most of the scares were really typical jump scares and obvious “look away, look back, AH!” type of stuff. Even the Nun character seemed to be less present in this movie than some of the others that didn’t have The Nun title.
By the end, I felt like I had wasted an hour and a half with a boring story. The minimal scares and lack of strong characters gave me the sense that the Nun character should have just stayed part of the larger Conjuring universe. Like a bad movie based on a mediocre Saturday Night Live sketch, this really didn’t need a feature length production.
