I love me some Julia Garner. In this film, she plays the wife of Blake (Christopher Abbott), who turns into a werewolf after being scratched by another werewolf in rural Oregon. It’s the classic “good guy becomes the monster” type of flick.
The film started in a wonderful way of setting up the main character as a kid hunting with his dad in the forest then flashing forward 30 years to the grown up Blake with his daughter in big city San Francisco. There were all these themes of fatherhood and the kid turning into his dad in his grownup form. Relatable stuff.
As the tension ramped up and action took over, the interesting character stuff just vanished into thin air. Julia Garner’s character and the daughter took the focus off Blake, which made me stop caring. The third act was supposed to be emotional and it lost all weight when it abruptly ended.
