Danielle Deadwyler plays Ramona, a woman who recently lost her husband in a car accident and is left to take care of their two children on a large farm somewhere in rural America. On top of a crushing mortgage and the power being shut off, Ramona’s leg is still jacked up from the accident.
After the family has woken up, had some breakfast, and expressed frustration with their ongoing situation, a woman in a black veil appears at the edge of their front yard. She’s far enough away that they can’t really make out any details. Ramona hobbles out on her crutches to ask the woman what she’s doing there and the responses leave Ramona on edge.
This is one of those movies that seems like an interesting idea, but ultimately fails execution and falls apart midway through. It’s got all the tension and scares, but the story exposes the truth and makes the viewer question what they have been watching. Is it fact or fiction or fever dream?
The acting and visuals are really well done, and I wanted so much to like the totality of this film. While I was happy with the way it ended, I kinda felt like the 86 minutes that came before were mostly a waste of time.
