Sophie Thatcher portrays Iris, a simple woman in love with boring everyman Josh, played by Jack Quaid. The two take a weekend getaway vacation to a secluded mansion to hang with some friends. Things take a deadly turn when Iris slices and dices one of Josh’s friends who attempts to sexually assault her.
The plot thickens, because Iris is actually a robot companion (read: sex bot) for Josh. Well, the plot thickens even more when Iris learns that she isn’t actually human and tries to escape.
I wouldn’t necessarily call this a horror. There are a few horrific elements, but it seems much more interested in the philosophical themes of agency and consciousness, as well as the metaphor of abusive relationships.
I enjoyed the shit out of this movie. It was attention-grabbing from the start and kept moving at an even pace. The cast was well-rounded and both the leads did well at shifting their acting when the story moved in different directions.
