It’s the 1930s and twin brothers Smoke and Stack (both played by Michael B. Jordan) return to their home of Mississippi after getting rich in Chicago by stealing gangster money. Upon their arrival, they start making immediate plans to set up a juke joint for that evening. Well, the shit hits the fan when vampires come to feast on the party.
This is my favorite kind of horror film. It takes time to build and then explodes with chaos. It has flawed characters who are still relatable and likeable. Best of all, it tells a horror story that drips with social commentary without ramming anything down your throat.
It’s an entertaining film with great performances and ideas that keep you invested in the story. The music is like a character unto itself. The film takes place over the course of about a 24-hour period and while it is at times quite brutal, it’s also one hell of a party.
