Cuckoo (2024)

This is a tough one for me, because I genuinely like odd-ball Lynchian type genre-busting “what the frick did I just watch?” movies. The story is simple until it’s not. The main protagonist is Gretchen (Hunter Schafer) who moves in with her father and step family after the death of her mother. As she tries to adjust to this new life, this crazed lady with red eyes keeps attacking her and no one believes her.

It also has Dan Stevens as Herr König, the guy who owns the resort where they are staying. He’s always a treat in almost everything he’s in.

I liked the visuals and the music, but the pacing seemed to crash in the latter half. Even though there were dangerous things happening, it was hard to believe there was any real peril for the characters we cared about.

The movie reminded me a bit of Panos Cosmatos’ Beyond the Black Rainbow. Weird with stimulating visuals and sound. What it lacked was a cohesive and engaging story.
