Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones) is a simple girl with simple problems. She has trouble dating and finding the right guy until Steve (Sebastian Stan) finds her in a supermarket. The two hit it off and the next thing you know, they are off to a surprise weekend getaway in a remote wooded location. RED FLAG ALERT SPOILER ALERT! Turns out “Steve” is a little bit of an entrepreneur of sorts and brings women out to his secluded hideaway to chop them up slowly and sell their “fresh meat” to rich cannibalistic asshats. “The taste is exquisite.”
It starts out innocently enough, then spirals out and becomes tense with sprinkles of discomfort. The entire cast is wonderful with Sebastian Stan showing he can rise above The Winter Soldier and even bring a little bit of humor to a despicable character. Daisy Edgar-Jones gives the perfect mix of vulnerable/afraid with toughness and the intelligence necessary to survive a messed up situation.
While it is not the type of movie you really need to watch again, there are many things the movie does right to keep the viewer engaged. The subject matter is a hard meat nugget to swallow, but it’s refreshing to find something that isn’t a total piece of shit.
