This one was delicious in a way I have not seen for awhile. Imagine seeing the events of a Friday the 13th style movie from the perspective of Jason Voorhees. When a group of campers take a locket, a zombie corpse killer comes to life to seek revenge and reclaim said locket.
All the stalking and killing is from the view of the killer, Johnny. He’s slow and methodical, waiting for his victims to be isolated enough to take them out with nearby weaponry, one-by-one. Yes, there is a fair amount of walking and yes, that may seem boring to some. I like hiking, so it didn’t bother me.
There were some slow parts, but that was kind of the point. As the viewer, you’re going along for the ride as an unstoppable slashing death machine. It was particularly refreshing not having to deal with all the college-aged camping idiots. They are not the focus. Oh, they were there, just mostly off screen or getting killed. I really liked the lake sequence for its clever aquatic styling.
Even though I wanted to give this one a full five-taco rating, I can’t, because it wasn’t quite the perfection I needed. The idea of flipping the perspective was great. There were just a couple swings and misses that ultimately brought it down. Specifically, the end “final girl” bit was drawn out and, while interesting in certain ways, it ultimately seemed a bit boring.
