I had high hopes for this one as something relevant to current social media trends. The plot involves a woman, CW (Cassandra Naud), who befriends an influencer named Madison (Emily Tennant) in Thailand. After chumming it with her new bud, CW drops Madison on an island and leaves her there. She then takes over Madison’s influencer life through some clever technological shenanigans.
When Madison’s slightly estranged boyfriend, Ryan, shows up, things start to take a darker turn as CW attempts to conceal her bad deeds. It seemed a lot like the “lying liars continue to lie to cover their ass” trope, but in this case, homicide is CW’s cover-up tool.
There were some interesting moments and I liked the dark tone. However, I never felt like I understood CW’s true motivation with the minimal character development. Does she just hate influencers that much? Is she a con-artist who had to adapt to new situations? It was clever how CW was very manipulative as an influencer of the influencers, but the whole movie just wasn’t clever enough despite numerous attempts.
