The Blob (1958)

I have a soft spot for the 1988 remake starring Kevin Dillon, but this original film is better in most ways. Sure, it is rather old and suffers from the limitations of the time. The special effects are better than I thought they would be, and had me wondering how they pulled certain things off.

Steve McQueen is great as always and it’s fun seeing the writing and acting that was of that era. Like when the main characters go into a movie theater to find their buddy Tony, and the old guy in the back is fed up with the malarkey, he’s like “OK, you kids knock it off!” Boy, how times have changed.

The ending is also wonderful where they just fly what’s left of the blob to the arctic and drop it off. “It’ll be fine as long as it stays cold.” I would love to see a modern sequel where global warming wakes up the blob and it comes back to take over New York or something.
