It’s like a horror fairy tale primarily about the Little Red Riding Hood. The main character, Rosaleen, is shown to be dreaming in the present day as herself playing a character in a far off land of make believe that has a lot of werewolves doing bad things.
In many ways, the movie plays like a made-for-TV special with a mix of A-list actors and then a bunch of no-name randos who’ve never been in anything ever. Angela Landsbury and David Warner are fine, but aren’t exactly turning any heads with their performances.
Then you got amazing cinematography and production design that could very well be out of a Ridley Scott film.
I especially liked the long, drawn-out horrific transition from man to beast where the guy rips all his skin off first. Though a bit dated, the effects aren’t the worst for the time period.
What I found strange was how it felt like something for kids half the time and then something that was very much not for kids the rest of the time. This is what I like about the 1980s. No shits were given and while it didn’t exactly work out to make a great film this time, I do still applaud the attempt made to try something new and fresh.
