I was expecting just another boring Purge movie and it is really not that. It starts with the return of the Purge, but after the one night of mayhem is over, something is different. Various factions decide they don’t want to be done Purging and things get out of control very quickly. The main cast is then faced with a difficult task of survival and retreat to Mexico.
It’s extremely violent and gory as we’ve come to expect from this franchise. I like how it tries to weave the tale through a sociopolitical commentary of current problems regarding race, immigration, culture wars, and violence. However, there are times where it is a bit too forced when it should be subtle. Yes, yes, we know you have something to say, but can you tone it down a bit. Movies like Dawn of the Dead, Get Out, or They Live are classics, because they say what they need to say with subtext, not overt throat cramming.
Even though the third act is a bit dull, the package is enjoyable with its fast pace and tense situations.
