Based on the novel by Bram Stoker, I have to say that this is a weird movie, but I kinda dug it. After an archaeologist (Peter Capaldi) finds a strange large snake skull, he starts to suspect there is more to the local legend of the white worm.
In comes the Lady Marsh (Amanda Donohoe) and people start getting bitten by unseen snakes when she’s around or they just go missing entirely. Turns out she’s a snake priestess that makes sacrifices to this large snake creature that lives deep in the earth.
Then you got Hugh Grant playing Lord d’Ampton, who is the descendent of a long line of worm slayers and he knows what he has to do.
I really liked the uneasy tone throughout and while there was no clear protagonist, I enjoyed that some of the characters did some intelligent things (for once). There were several plot threads involving the use of snake charmer type music to subdue the snake characters. The archaeologist guy goes so far as to play a bagpipe non-stop so he won’t get bitten.
The movie could be better as it suffers from B-grade everything, but it happens to do a couple things right and stays pretty entertaining throughout.
