This is a simple one location, minimal cast, Australian psychological horror film that works well at creating a tense scenario for most of the film. The plot centers around Patrick, a middle-aged man who lives alone in his trailer. On a dark and stormy night, a young woman knocks on the door asking for a ride.
The storm won’t let up and the woman becomes increasingly uncomfortable with staying there, even though Patrick seems like a gentle teddy bear. He offers her dry clothes and food, but lets her make her own decisions about how much to trust him.
While I found myself wondering “Is he a serial killer?” or “What is she hiding?” The third act disintegrated into a mess of unsatisfying chaos. I won’t reveal the exact outcome, but I felt a bit cheated by the cliched ending.
I liked most of what it did, especially since it seemed to do a lot with very little. For a low budget indie film, I’d say it was successful at creating an intense guessing game. However, the payoff should have been something that embraced the lead-up rather than throwing it out the door.
