Doom Asylum (1988)

Sometimes, the cheesy comedy is intentional. Or at least, that seems to be the only explanation.

With Doom Asylum, it is like they were trying to make a horror movie spoof deliberately. Whatever the case may be, they achieved something amazing.

The whole thing starts with a car accident that disfigures the driver and kills his girlfriend. Someone should have been wearing seatbelts.

10 years later, a group of college kids decide to have a picnic at an abandoned psychiatric asylum where the disfigured driver guy lives like a Quasimodo Leatherface, watching old movies and waiting to murder anyone who comes for a picnic visit. Also lurking at the asylum is a punk rock group practicing their music (remember, it’s the late 80s). Plenty of fodder for the maniac to go apeshit on.

Kristen Davis from Sex and the City fame spends the entire movie in a swimsuit and gigantic 80s glasses. The death gimmicks and special FX were surprisingly good for what has to be a mostly non-existent budget.

The area where it really shines, though, is the dialog, which feels like it was written by two drunk dudes and a chimp. If it wasn’t bad enough in written form, the delivery by the cast elevates it to a higher level of trash and it is glorious to behold.
