The Final Girls (2015)

If you like the horror comedy genre, this one is a lot of fun. It’s like Last Action Hero meets Friday the 13th with jokes and gags thrown in.

Max (Taissa Farmiga) and her group of friends go to a Camp Blood movie double-feature and are magically transported inside the movie when trying to escape a theater fire. More than seeing the film from the inside, they also need to act out scenes to progress and try to survive the brutal killer.

One of the main characters in the Camp Blood movie is played by Max’s actress mom (Malin Akerman) who died 3 years prior. It’s a bittersweet reunion as Max gets to see her mother again, but her mother doesn’t know who she is. This extra plot thread added a nice level of depth to the character, however, it went a bit too far with the sappy stuff at times.

The cast also included Alia Shawkat, Adam Devine, and Thomas Middleditch which each brought their own style of humor to the mix.

There were some funny moments and I really like that it felt like something fresh even though it was retreading a lot of common ground. The pacing was great at the beginning but then slowed down a bit in the middle. Still, this is close in tone and enjoyability to Cabin in the Woods or Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil.
