From the mind behind Re-Animator comes Castle Freak. Writer/Director Stuart Gordon tells the story of a family who inherits a castle in Italy. They travel there to stay at the castle while they figure out what to do with it. It turns out there is a scary freak monster that lives in the dungeon under the castle.
The father of the family is played by Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator) and we find out that he is an alcoholic who crashed the family car, killing his young son, JJ, and permanently blinding his daughter Rebecca. Father of the Year award goes to… Oh, and he had an affair, so the wife (Barbara Crampton) is one step away from divorcing his ass.
The story was engaging at the beginning, but kind of fizzled as the freak monster is revealed to be a hideous half-brother of Jeffrey Combs and not much of a menacing monster. That and the freak runs around naked with his stubby mutilated ding-a-ling and sack out in the open. Never have I ever been more happy that a movie was not high resolution HD quality.
This would have been a better movie if the monster were scarier, more obscured, and less of a perv. I want the monster freaking people out and killing stuff, not watching people sleep and groping every chance it gets.
